The Role of Communication in People Management

"People Management" may be a trendy buzzword, but it is an increasingly important part of the modern day world of business and commerce. Corporate survival and success is always dependent on people, but in times of economic and financial uncertainty the role people play comes to the fore. People are a business' main asset, but they can quickly become a liability when indifferent or poor management is present.

Communication is a vital part of People Management and needs to be honed to a high level if we are to develop and use our resources effectively. The 6 'Ms' cover the main categories of resource:

  • Materials
  • Machines
  • Minutes
  • Markets
  • Money
  • Manpower

These are stocks on which you draw each day to achieve the goals of the business.

How effective are you with your resources?

The following are examples of resources being wasted due to poor communication:

  • Lost Minutes due to instructions being misunderstood
  • Wasted Materials due to information being misinterpreted
  • De-motivated Manpower due to the "Nobody tells me anything" syndrome

T.I.P. (To Improve Performance)

Communication is a two-way process in which there is a transmitter and a receiver. Effective People Management requires Managers to transmit. Make sure the receiver is switched on and you are transmitting on THEIR wavelength using a communication style that suits THEM. On completion, it is vital to ensure your transmission was successful, and the easiest way to do this is ask for feedback or confirmation of content from the receiver.

Remember: Turn on -> Tune in -> Transmit -> Test
